Knuth Machine Tools’ VDM series includes a range of conventional vertical lathes in seven sizes ranging from 31.5" to 102" swing. All the VDM-series lathes feature heavy-duty construction with fine-grain castings, large headstock, a heavy machine bed and wide box ways. According to the company, the lathes are designed as a replacement for aging vertical lathes or as an alternative to purchasing remanufactured machines.
The vertical lathes are equipped for OD or ID turning and feature a vertical ram with five-station toolholder and horizontal side ram with four-position toolholder. The adjustable spindle runs in a high-precision two-row roller bearing, and its reduction gear drive ensures high torque, the company says. Spindle motors are available ranging to 50 hp on the VDM 2600 model. The lathes accommodate machining heights ranging to 59", and options are available for extended columns for more height capacity. Maximum workpiece weight capacity is more than 22,000 lbs.
The VDM series includes models that feature an inverter-controlled turntable for infinitely variable speeds in four gear ranges from 1.2 to 315 rpm. The machines have a new control panel with a three-axis digital readout and feature a spindle speed display. Optional full enclosures, turntable enclosures and chip conveyors are available.
