Expanite’s surface hardening for stainless steel enables lead times as short as three days and provides improved wear and corrosion resistance. Whereas stainless steel naturally resists corrosion, its softer surface is prone to excessive wear and/or galling. Expanite’s hardening process is said to increase the surface hardness of stainless steels to between 1,200 and 1,500 HV0.05 while maintaining corrosion resistance, depending on base material and surface conditions. It is compatible with austenitic, ferritic, martensitic and duplex stainless steels. The process also improves resistance to galling, cavitation erosion and abrasive wear. Expanite technology can benefit such parts as extruder screw and injection parts for the automotive industry, among others.
