The Sphinx deep-hole drill from Big Kaiser is designed to save time in creating start holes for wire EDM. According to the company, the micro-drill can perform as much as five times faster per hole than plunge EDM, and is suitable for applications in which a plate requires many starter holes. The holes can be prepared on a standard machining center to shorten process times, with no need to exchange tools.
The micro-drill is constructed of carbide and features an abrasion-resistant coating to enable drilling starting holes in high-strength alloyed tool steels. Holes with a length/diameter ratio as high as 80×D can be drilled in the range of 0.25 to 1.50 mm diameter, in steps of 0.1 mm for hole depths ranging to 20×, 40×, 60× and 80×D. A centering/pilot hole of 2×D is recommended to begin the process with the deep-hole drill, followed by a peck cycle until the hole is completed.
