Inserts Offer Long Life, Tight Tolerances
Kennametal has added screw-on, positive chipbreaker inserts to its Beyond line, which includes 11 grades for improved productivity in steel, stainless steel and cast iron turning applications. The chipbreaker inserts, which include the FP (finishing positive), MP (medium/roughing positive) and MW (flat top) models, are said to provide significant tool life savings across a range of applications and materials. Additionally, the inserts’ tight dimensional tolerances can improve indexability, the company says.

The screw-on inserts share characteristics of the entire Beyond line, including micro-polished edges for toughness, post-coating treatment to reduce depth-of-cut notching and a fine-grained alumina layer that is said to enhance coating integrity at high cutting speeds. Along with UF (Ultra Fine Finishing) chipbreaker inserts, these models cover the entire range of machining needs, the company says.
FP chipbreaker inserts incorporate a chip groove for reduced cutting forces as well as a nose design that avoids chip overcrowding in the nose radius area. According to the company, these features optimize chip control and permit higher metal removal rates at lower cutting forces. The MP inserts perform well in chamfering applications, the company says. Additionally, they feature high-strength edges for increased cutting depths in spindle boring operations. The flat-top MW inserts are designed to provide positive cutting as well as consistent chip control in short-chipping materials such as cast iron.
