The TP1500 grade of carbide inserts is designed for turning steels at high cutting speeds without sacrificing the toughness needed for reliability, the company says. In conjunction with the MR6 chipbreaker, the grade is said to feature longer tool life, increased productivity and lower costs than competitive grades positioned to handle similar applications. Developed using the company’s Duratomic process, the grade’s crystalline structure is manipulated at the atomic level. According to developers, this process produces a durable coating that combines edge toughness and wear resistance.  While targeted specifically at steel machining, the coating and substrate properties also make the grade an option for a variety of cast iron applications, especially those involving ductile and compacted graphite iron. The grade is offered in a range of insert geometries to cover turning applications from finishing to heavy roughing, where productivity and/or long tool life are of major importance.
