Carbide Drill Enables 40×D Holemaking without Pecking

Mikron Tool’s CrazyDrill Cool SST-Inox is a carbide drill available in diameters ranging from 0.039" to 0.236" and developed for machining stainless steels, superalloys and chrome-cobalt alloys. After the launch of length versions ranging to 20×D, this type of tool is now available for holes ranging to 40×D.
A chipbreaking profile at the tip of the tool creates short chips, while an enlarged flute profile in the rear section provides massive, constant cooling and chip evacuation. For drilling deeper than 10×D, fine polishing creates an extremely smooth spiral flute surface for flushing out chips.
The new SST-drill has spiralized integrated cooling ducts leading up to the drill tip. The cross section has a “drop shape,” differing from the usual round cross section. The advantage, according to Mikron Tool, is a four-times higher coolant volume. This cooling performance prevents overheating and subsequent chipping of cutting edges as well as buildup of material.
The CrazyDrill Cool SST-Inox applies its features to enable deep hole drilling in one single feed stroke without the need for pecking.
